The numbers are in! The first annual Saratoga Recycles Day was a huge success thanks to more than 60 volunteers and all those who participated in the event.
- 11,500 pounds of clothing, textiles, shoes and hats were collected.
- 4 carloads of clothing, shoes, suitcases, sleeping bags and sheets, etc. were gathered for the Backstretch Employee Service Team (BEST).
- Over 100 backpacks were collected for Shelters of Saratoga for people who participate in their programs.
- 89 bicycles were collected, of which many were distributed to Bikeatoga and the backstretch worker program. 20 were recycled for scrap metal. In addition, many participants swapped bikes on the spot.
“In addition to the items above, tons of metal, appliances and electronics such as printers and computer components were kept out of the landfill,” said Art Holmberg, Chair of Sustainable Saratoga’s Zero Waste Committee. “We are proud of this inaugural event and so pleased to provide an opportunity for these items to be reused or recycled. This was truly a great community effort which we plan to continue.”
Sustainable Saratoga plans to make this an annual event. Stay tuned for more information regarding Saratoga Recycles Day 2018!
