Sustainable Saratoga and Skidmore College are hosting the inaugural Saratoga Sustainability Fair on Saturday, April 6, 2019 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs.
The mission of the sustainability fair is to support the three interconnected pillars of sustainability— environmental responsibility, social equity, economic development—by connecting people to community resources and organizations that contribute to making our community a more sustainable place to live for current and future generations.
The fair will bring exhibitors, presenters, and the community together to advocate for and improve awareness about sustainability activities and opportunities. The fair includes an EV car show, a tour of Skidmore’s sustainability efforts, exhibitor booths, workshop presentations, a keynote speaker, and more. We hope to see you on April 6!
Keynote Speaker (Gannett Auditorium in Palamountain Hall, 11 a.m. to noon): Aaron Mair – environmentalist, scientist, and 57th National President of the Sierra Club – will be our keynote speaker. Aaron will discuss Democracy, Intersectionality and Building a Strong Climate Movement.
“To build a climate movement strong enough to stop irreversible climate disruption, a critical mass of Americans must believe in a healthy functioning civil society and an economically secure clean energy economy. The good news is we are already on the way: large majorities of Americans want us to move toward a clean energy economy and want climate action now; so how do we restore the metaphorical governing wetlands?”
Exhibitor booths (Case Center, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.): More than 30 exhibitors are participating in the fair, bringing resources about renewable energy, zero waste, sustainable gardening, social justice, alternative transportation, food production and security, natural resource protection, energy efficiency, plastic alternatives, non-toxic products, green building design, sustainability efforts in Saratoga Springs…click HERE to see the complete list of exhibitors.
Sustainability Tour (begins at Case Center, 2 p.m.): Get a first-hand look at Skidmore’s sustainability initiatives, including one of the geothermal energy nodes that heat and cool about 35 percent of Skidmore’s campus.
Electric vehicle car show (Case Center parking lot, 12:30 to 3:30 p.m.): Five electric vehicles of various makes and models, including a Tesla, will be onsite. A Mitsubishi Outlander will be available for test drives.
Workshop presentations (Ladd Hall, 12:30 to 4 p.m.): Nineteen workshop presentations are scheduled for the afternoon. Topics include: solar energy, geothermal heating and cooling, environmental and social impact investing, composting, environmental justice issues, climate change, stormwater management, organic gardening, urban forest renewal…click HERE for descriptions of the workshops.
