SUMMARY:Science on Tap
DESCRIPTION:Science On Tap is a monthly series of informal talks led by scientists that explore current research topics and the importance of science in our daily life. Each talk takes place in a relaxed pub atmosphere where communication flows freely between scientists and the public. Co-presented by Skidmore’s Environmental Studies and Sciences Department and Sustainable Saratoga\, these monthly opportunities for discussion reflect the unique intellectual culture of the greater Capital Region and promote scientific literacy. \nThe next Science on Tap is Wednesday\, November 20 @ 7:00 pm. \nAdmission is free and all ages are welcome. Come early to get a bite to eat. The talk will start promptly at 7:00pm. \nTitle: Pastures\, Pyramids\, and Pests: Spatial Data Science Across Landscapes Old and New \nDescription: This talk will explore the transformative ability of geospatial analysis to reveal hidden insights of the world around us. Charlie will guide attendees through the basics of GIS and remote sensing technology with a diverse set of cases: from satellite analysis of spongy moth infestations in our back yard; to exploring the importance of grazing systems to climate resilience in the American West; to unraveling mysteries of Maya land use in Guatemala. \nBio: Charlie is the Director of the GIS Center for Interdisciplinary Research at Skidmore College. Charlie teaches GIS and remote sensing courses\, and collaborates with faculty\, students\, and community partners on a diverse array of research projects. Outside of his work\, you can still find Charlie using maps to traverse the trails\, lakes\, and snowy slopes of the Adirondacks with his family.
