SUMMARY:Science on Tap
DESCRIPTION:Science On Tap is a monthly series of informal talks led by scientists that explore current research topics and the importance of science in our daily life. Each talk takes place in a relaxed pub atmosphere where communication flows freely between scientists and the public. Co-presented by Skidmore’s Environmental Studies and Sciences Department and Sustainable Saratoga\, these monthly opportunities for discussion reflect the unique intellectual culture of the greater Capital Region and promote scientific literacy. \nThe next Science on Tap is Wednesday\, November 20 @ 7:00 pm. \nAdmission is free and all ages are welcome. SUMMARY:Composting in the Cold
DESCRIPTION:Did you know you can keep composting your food scraps even after the leaves fall and the snow begins to fly? This workshop will address how to optimize your fall leaf cleanup and ready your back yard compost system for hibernation. Beginning composters welcome. \nThis workshop will be led by Jennifer Armstrong.\nJennifer Armstrong has been gardening since childhood. Making compost for the garden has always been a strong motivation\, and now keeping food waste out of the landfill is an additional motivation. She is the chair of Sustainable Saratoga’s Compost Committee\, and has led numerous workshops in the area to help people get started with composting – whether they want the end product for their garden or not. \nComposting in the Cold is co-sponsored by Pitney Meadows Community Farm and Sustainable Saratoga. \nSustainable Saratoga is a not-for-profit organization that promotes sustainable practices and the protection of natural resources\, through education\, advocacy and action\, for the benefit of current and future generations in the Saratoga Springs area. The organization’s projects and events focus on 5 categories within sustainability: zero waste\, urban forestry\, pollinators\, land use\, and climate and energy. \nFounded in 2016\, Pitney Meadows Community Farm’s mission is to celebrate and explore agricultural education\, healthy food production\, and recreation on this preserved working farm. Located on 166 acres in the heart of the City of Saratoga Springs and preserved in perpetuity as a working farm\, Pitney Meadows is a unique resource. We’re committed to being good stewards of the land and serving the community that invested their tax dollars to preserve the Farm as open space. \nRegister here: https://secure.lglforms.com/form_engine/s/Nq2JungpLVX9Br_uGwxlXA?t=1711123483

SUMMARY:The Story of Plastic
DESCRIPTION:The Story of Plastic is a searing exposé revealing the ugly truth behind plastic pollution and the false solution of plastic recycling. Different from every other plastic documentary you’ve seen\, The Story of Plastic presents a cohesive timeline of how we got to our current global plastic pollution crisis and how the oil and gas industry has successfully manipulated the narrative around it. From the extraction of fossil fuels and plastic disposal to the global resistance fighting back\, The Story of Plastic is a life-changing\, Emmy-winning film depicting one of the world’s most pressing environmental issues.  Approximately 95 minutes

SUMMARY:Northshire Saratoga: Justin Nobel - Petroleum-238
DESCRIPTION:Join us as acclaimed science journalist Justin Nobel shares his extraordinary seven-year investigation into how the U.S. oil and gas industry has avoided environmental regulations and created a dangerous and radioactive public health crisis. \nAs Justin Nobel traveled the United States reporting on the oil and gas industry he learned a disturbing and little-considered fact: more comes to the surface at a well than just the oil and gas. Each year the industry produces billions of tons of waste\, much of it toxic and radioactive. The fracking boom has only worsened the problem. So where does it all go? \nPetroleum-238 provides the shocking answer. Shielded by a system of lax regulations and legal loopholes\, this waste has been spilled\, spread\, injected\, dumped\, and freely emitted across America. Nobel relies on oilfield workers\, community activists\, a century of academic research\, and a trove of never-before released industry and government documents to lay out a series of game-changing reveals into the world’s most powerful industry. None have been more deceived than the industry’s own workers\, who are suffering mysterious health maladies and dying from unexplainable cancers. \nThis book is an impressive work of investigative science journalism with surprising moments of literary beauty\, and a welcome breakdown of the false wall corporations and politicians often set between industry workers and environmentalists. In the tradition of Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring\, Petroleum-238 is both a landmark work of environmental writing and an urgent call to action.
