We fell hard for Zero Waste Events this fall!
The Zero Waste Committee has been very busy with events this fall! All of these would not be possible without our amazing partners and dedicated volunteers! Thank you all for helping us make Saratoga more sustainable!
September 14 Backyard Composting Workshop
We held another composting workshop with Pitney Meadows Community Farm this fall titled, The Composting Chronicles: Composting in the Cold. Our compost educator, Jennifer Armstrong, shared helpful tips and tricks on how to continue composting food scraps all winter long!
September 21 Paint Collection Day
The third annual Paint Collection Day in Saratoga Springs with GreenSheen Paint was a huge success! GreenSheen serviced 690 cars and collected 69,452 pounds of paint for recycling and reuse. Thank you to the volunteers who directed car traffic: Deann Downing, Elisha Sinchi, Mary Knutson, Polar Brehm, Sam Brewer, Tom McNamara, Kelsey Skaine, Jayden Hardwick, Brian Schmitt, Barbara Guilder, Eva Hoskin, Steven Elder, Beth Plummer, Shannon McKeighan, Libby Brennesholtz, Joe Tyler, David Sayer, and Beanon Destino.
September 22 Repair Café
Our coaches and guests repaired a total of 31 items, including jewelry, lamps, clothing, shoes, and vacuum cleaners being some of the more common items. Thank you to our coaches for their time and dedication to the repair movement, Jennifer Ferriss and the Saratoga Springs Public Library for being a great partner and host, Caroline Rothaug and Wendy Mahaney for supporting the planning and day-of event management, Maja Smemo for taking photos, and our volunteers who worked the check-in table, Piper Lutbak and Sally Sheldon. Don’t miss our final Repair Café of 2024 on December 7.
October 19 Saratoga Recycles Day
We were overjoyed to see the level of support for the eighth annual Saratoga Recycles Day – 428 cars! Thank you to this year’s sponsor, Adirondack Trust Company! Our participating organizations include Saratoga Springs Lions Club, Wellspring, Saratoga Children’s Literacy League, Bulk Book Warehouse, American Clothing Company, Bikeatoga, Youth Squared, Capital Region Electronics Recycling, and Scrapster.
Volunteers who dedicated their time to working the event are David Sayer, Allison Read, Barbara Sherman, Kelsey Skaine, Tom McNamara, Hannah Dukerschein, Shelley and Bruce Tabakman, Jordan Anderson, Addie Zoller, Michelle Chank, Mike Morrett, Nancy Welsh, Michelle Iturrate, Adrianne and Richie Constant, Deann Downing, Rebecca Hawkins, and Steven Elder. It was great to be joined by employees from Saratoga Eagle and Anchor QEA.
Due to multiple circumstances beyond our control, the e-waste and scrap metal station was quickly overcapacity and we made the difficult decision to close that line during the event. We thank you all for your patience and understanding. For anyone with items you weren’t able to drop off on Saturday, here are some helpful resources:
